Foundations of the faith

“Lectures in Systematic Theology” by Henry Thiessen

Course Description:

  • This is a look at what could be called “Doctrines of the Christian faith.”  We will be covering eight key areas of what Christians believe, noting differences of opinions on some topics when necessary, along with coming to our own conclusions on certain beliefs. Some of the doctrines we study are crucial to the historic Christian faith and cannot be downplayed or overlooked.

I find Thiessen to have a very balanced approach when it comes to the study of theology. He gives various viewpoints on topics but is also honest in defining what and why he believes what he does.

  • We will see how theology applies to our life.  We will see that what we call “statements of belief” have practical meaning for our everyday lives. As an example, the Bible tells us that God is All-Knowing. How does that play out in the real world? How can that belief help us as we journey through life? The goal is the application as well as the knowledge of what the Bible teaches on foundational truths found in God’s Word.

  • We will deal with important doctrinal beliefs as taught in Scripture and will encourage each other to come to conclusions based on what we understand the Word of God to be saying on those vital historic beliefs of the church.

Upon completion of this course, students will know or be able to do the following:

  1. Apply and personalize these areas of doctrine individually and corporately as a church.

  2. Have the materials and knowledge to help others to learn Theology and how it can apply to them.

  3. Understand that some theological beliefs are “non-negotiable” and essential to one’s faith and salvation. An example would be the “Deity of Christ.” In 1 Jn. 2, John notes that to deny the Son (His character, nature, and work) is to reject a key doctrine necessary to the Christian faith.
